Surrounded by 175 acres of vineyards and only 10 minutes drive from Pézenas and beaches this property is the place to stay for wine lovers, a large family or two smaller families.
The rental property comprises a bastide, built in the 1700s and an Art Deco wing added in 1934, both of which were recently renovated. It houses 6 main ’boutique hotel style’ bedrooms with en-suite bath-or shower rooms – each furnished to a high standard of comfort with luxurious facilities plus a further en-suite bedroom in a separate wing. Throughout the house you will find antique French tiled floors and chandeliers.
You will have at your disposal: a grand salon with large fireplace and grand piano, cinema room, kitchen with all appliances, library, dining room (seating 12) and second sitting room with fireplace. Throughout the property there is air conditioning/heating, wifi, satellite television and sound systems. Staff accommodation can also be provided.
The park with 200 year old pine trees and rose garden has several terraces surrounded by lavender with wooden dining tables, chairs and parasols.
There are sun loungers by the heated pool (11 X 5 M) and a relaxing lounge sofa set – perfect for an apero before dinner.
We will welcome you with a gift-package of our wines. During your stay a member of our wine team would be delighted to give you an in-depth tour around the vineyards and wineries and of course invite you to sample our wines.
During the summer the house is generally available on a Saturday to Saturday basis although this can occasionally vary to accommodate wedding parties. The rental includes end cleaning and optionally you can choose: daily cleaning service, bread and patisserie delivery, laundry service, chef and other services. Outside of the summer season shorter rental periods are available, as is the possibility to rent only one wing of the house (3 en-suite bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, sitting room, cinema room and library).
We are pleased to offer you a tailored set of services to make your stay even more enjoyable:
Included in your stay is a wine tasting and tour around the vineyard and winery, during which, based upon your interest, you can learn more about the wines and the art of wine making. And of course wine may be purchased from our shop at any time to drink here or to take home.
Our host will be happy to provide you with suggestions and tips to explore the region. We can offer advice about the interesting places you could visit, best shops and markets, sport activities, festivals, the many local nearby restaurants and more. We can also make reservations for you if required.
There are outdoor games at your disposal such as a pétanque, croquet and a badminton set to enjoy in the park.
We have some nice walking tours available that start at the Domaine; alternatively, you can borrow our 4 bikes to explore further afield – perhaps cycling into the local village of Montagnac for a coffee and a visit to the weekly market. We can also arrange a boat trip to discover the Étang du Thau, famous for its oyster beds.
Beach towels are available and all bathrooms have soft white towels and gowns, hairdryers and toiletries.
Catering to suit your needs can be arranged with prior notice – for example, a simple breakfast basket or lavish full breakfast each day, or perhaps one of our famous seafood platters from the Étang du Thau – highly recommended with a bottle of our Vermentino, or even your own chef for in-villa catering.
For those who want to enjoy a relaxing beauty day at the domaine we can book massages or beauty treatments or for the more energetically minded, a personal trainer.
And if you have something to celebrate, we can arrange cakes, flowers and champagne.
All year there is daily management and an on-site guardian for any other requirements you may have.
There is free wifi access in all rooms and outside.
Things to do
Situated between Montpellier, Pézenas and Beziers, and near the coastline of the Mediterranean sea, Domaine Saint Hilaire is the perfect base to discover the Languedoc region. The real South of France enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year, unspoiled landscapes, extensive wine fields, historic sites, fishing villages, canals, lagoons and miles of sandy beaches. Below we have some suggestions for you and additional information is available at the Domaine; of course we will be pleased to give you our best tips for a wonderful stay.
Nearby towns & villages
Pézenas is a beautiful historic town a short drive from the Domaine. The medieval and renaissance-era centre is lined with restaurants, art galleries, boutique fashion and antique shops. We particularly enjoy the Saturday morning market and the Friday evening soirées that are held each week in the summer, when the whole town comes alive with activity in the cool of the evening.
Marseillan, Mèze and Bouzigues are fishing villages on the Étang de Thau and are all a short drive away. These lovely villages are famed for their oysters and other seafood and each has a collection of restaurants lining the pretty harbours.
Cap d’Agde and Marseillan Plage are our local seaside resorts with excellent watersports (see section below) and miles of sandy beaches.
Montagnac is our closest village. Although only small it has several artisan shops with fresh local produce, a few typical rural French bars and restaurants and a lovely medieval church; guided tours are available in summer. See a short video about Montagnac made by the Mayor’s office here on YouTube with some nice aerial views of Saint Hilaire 2m 23s in.
Sète is an interesting mix of historic renaissance-era town, modern fishing port and the corniche with its long sandy beach. Enjoy the excellent seafood restaurants, a boat trip round the canals or soak up the summer atmosphere in the beach bars on the corniche.
Montpellier is about 40 minutes away and is the regional capital of the Languedoc. It is particularly popular for its historical centre, shopping or just people watching on the many plazas – especially the marbled Place de la Comedie.
Just the other side of Montagnac is the Abbaye de Valmagne which is a well preserved medieval abbey that has been a wine producing estate since the abbey’s dissolution around the time of the French revolution.
Also nearby are the remains of the Roman villa / vineyard of Loupian
About 90 minutes away by car but well worth the visit is the City-Castle of Carcassonne. This fully preserved / restored fortified town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited tourist sites in France.
Also about 90 minutes away is the iconic Pont du Gard, an extremely well preserved Roman aqueduct now also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Finally, in about 45 minutes you can arrive at Saint Guilhem le Désert. This medieval village is classified as one of the most beautiful of France and is another UNESCO site. Do not forget to visit its abbey and the nearby Pont du Diable. You can also go for a nice stroll on one of the many walking circuits or visit the Clamouse caves.
Sea, beaches, canals & watersports
We are 10 minutes from the water’s edge of the Étang de Thau (famed for its pure water and for supplying oysters to many of the best restaurants across Europe) and beyond that the Mediterranean. Unsurprisingly there is a huge array of watersports available nearby, as well as picturesque locations to relax by the sea.
Unique to our area is water jousting. This traditional sport pits two jousters against each other in boats. Each jouster tries to knock their opponent off a raised platform into the water using a wooden lance. Matches held in the local seaside towns and villages take place all summer and are very competitive culminating in a grand final on the main canal of Sète … not to be missed!
If you watch the jousting at Mèze keep an eye open for Yannick, our administrator, who is the President of the Mèze association).
Walks & bike tours
There are many well marked trails for walks and bike rides. Along the Roman Via Domitia, the Canal du Midi, the beaches or through the vineyards and into the mountains, enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Languedoc region and its spectacular views. Walks in the Herault, Cycling Languedoc,
VTT routes Herault
A fun thing we do a few times each summer is kayaking in the gorges made by the Hérault and Orb rivers. There are several companies who offer shorter and longer outings e.g. this one. Depending where you choose to start these are about 40 minutes from the Domaine.
There are various interesting museums in the area such as the famous Fabre museum in Montpellier, a museum about the oyster tables in Bouzigues, The Noilly Prat cellars, the Éphebe museum in Agde and many more. Museums of Pezenas, Cultural Montpellier, Roman Museum at Nimes, Museums of Sète, Musée de l’Ephèbe at Agde, Noilly Prat, Marseillan
